Requests from plastics manufacturers challenged Animex, an ABB strategic partner, to design a new vacuum solution for its Xflex integrated work cell. Animex wanted to reduce energy and increase performance of plastic material handling applications in the automotive industry. To solve the task, Animex had to think high performing, energy efficient and reliable.
"Our customers need to increase output without adding additional personnel or energy costs," says Tommy Timhagen, chief production manager at Animex. Having used Piab's Duraflex suction cups for many years, Animex decided to test the company's vacuum pumps. Timhagen contacted Melvin Zetterberg, product sales manager for vacuum automation at PD Lyftteknik, a Piab distributor based in Sweden. Together, Melvin and Tommy decided on the P3010 vacuum pump, featuring AVM (automated vacuum management).
Because it is based on Piab's patented multistage ejector Coax technology, the P3010 pump offered Animex a smaller, more efficient, more reliable and highly flexible technology that allowed the company to design a modular system.
The AVMT saves energy by shutting off the air consumption when the set vacuum level is reached, allowing the pump to perform at its optimal level even at a low working pressure. The result proved to be a huge improvement over Animex's previous automation solution. "We have increased output and experienced a significant return on investment from the new vacuum technology," says Timhagen. "We plan to increase orders for next year."
