This is the beginning of a three year story. It's about research into nanotechnology. A consortimum of 15 scientists are beginning to develop a new kind of chemistry. The idea is to take nanotubes, and build metal structures of just a few atoms onto the tubes' surface.

Billions of these nanotubes are made into a paste, and that is spread thinly on electrodes printed on a small square of plastic. The scientists believe they can develop this into the smallest, cheapest and most sensitive device ever made to detect gases. Unlike any other project, they are going to attempt to take the public along with them and to share the experience of doing science, with a series of video diaries like the one below. You can keep up to date with the project at www.nano2hybrids.net.
