The first ion beam therapy accelerator in Europe for tumor therapy at the Heidelberg University Hospital is totally equipped with vacuum technology from Pfeiffer Vacuum. In a pilot project, the Society for Heavy Ion Research (GSI) in Darmstadt has developed this new therapy that now enables incurable tumors to be healed.
The key advantage of this therapy is that the tumor receives irreparable damage while the healthy surrounding tissue remains unharmed. A big German electronics group has acquired the rights to manufacture and market these therapy accelerators worldwide.
Due to the absolute reliability and high quality of its products, Pfeiffer Vacuum was qualified as the preferred supplier for the high vacuum equipment. About 20 turbopump pumping stations are integrated in each accelerator.
